Frequently asked questions

These are short answers. There's more detail on How it works and Security.

The basics

What is Thallo?

Thallo is a web app for tracking your net worth in one place, across everything you own. You add your accounts (bank, savings, brokerage, pension, crypto, property, car, loans and cards), each in its own currency. Thallo then shows the total in the currency you choose and how it's changing. It also shows how much of a change came from exchange rates and how much from your balances, and a short weekly list of things worth a look. Each account has one balance, so you track accounts rather than individual investments.

Why no bank syncing?

You type in your balances yourself, so Thallo never needs your bank login. Typing a balance also works for any account in any country. That includes things bank syncing usually can't reach, like a workplace pension abroad, a deposit held by a landlord or the value of your car.

How long does updating take?

Usually a few minutes. The Update balances screen goes through your accounts one by one and shows last time's number next to each. If an account hasn't changed, you tap "No change", and if it has, you type the new number. On a phone it shows one account per screen, and if you close the page partway through, your draft is kept.

Can I track crypto, property, cars and loans?

Yes. Crypto counts as liquid. Property, cars and art use your own estimate, which is shown with ≈. Loans, mortgages and credit cards count as debt: you enter DKK 4,200 on a card as a positive number and Thallo subtracts it.

Which currencies can I use?

Each account has its own currency. You choose one display currency for the total, such as DKK, USD, EUR, THB or SGD, and you can change it whenever you like. Thallo has rates for 170 currencies, including some crypto and metals such as BTC and XAU.

All currency codes

AED, AFN, ALL, AMD, ANG, AOA, ARS, AUD, AWG, AZN, BAM, BBD, BCH, BDT, BHD, BIF, BMD, BND, BOB, BRL, BSD, BTC, BTN, BWP, BYN, BZD, CAD, CDF, CHF, CLP, CMD, CNH, CNY, COP, CRC, CUP, CVE, CZK, DJF, DKK, DOP, DZD, EGP, ERN, ETB, ETH, EUR, FJD, FKP, GBP, GEL, GGP, GHS, GIP, GMD, GNF, GTQ, GYD, HKD, HNL, HTG, HUF, IDR, ILS, IMP, INR, IQD, IRR, ISK, JEP, JMD, JOD, JPY, KES, KGS, KHR, KMF, KPW, KRW, KWD, KYD, KZT, LAK, LBP, LKR, LRD, LSL, LTC, LYD, MAD, MDL, MGA, MKD, MMK, MNT, MOP, MRU, MUR, MVR, MWK, MXN, MYR, MZN, NAD, NGN, NIO, NOK, NPR, NZD, OMR, PAB, PEN, PGK, PHP, PKR, PLN, PYG, QAR, RON, RSD, RUB, RWF, SAR, SBD, SCR, SDG, SEK, SGD, SHP, SLE, SOS, SRD, SSP, STN, SVC, SYP, SZL, THB, TJS, TMT, TND, TOP, TRY, TTD, TWD, TZS, UAH, UGX, USD, UYU, UZS, VES, VND, VUV, WST, XAF, XAG, XAU, XCD, XCG, XDR, XOF, XPD, XPF, XPT, XRP, YER, ZAR, ZMW, ZWG

Where do exchange rates come from?

They come from a free public service, Frankfurter, which publishes rates from central banks and official sources, and are fetched every day. Thallo stores them so that past totals can be worked out again.

Why did my net worth change when I didn't update anything?

Usually because exchange rates moved. For example, a THB 90,000 rental deposit might be worth DKK 17,668 at the end of September. If the baht falls slightly over the next month, the same deposit could be worth DKK 17,215 at the end of October, even though you didn't change anything. What moved shows how much of any change came from currency and how much from your balances.

Can I import my spreadsheet?

Yes. Copy your history into Thallo's template format and import it. The file is read in your browser and stays on your device, and only the accounts and balances you confirm are saved.

Is there a mobile app?

Not yet, but Thallo works in your phone's browser and Update balances is laid out for a phone screen. A native app is planned.

Your data

Is my data safe?

Thallo doesn't have your bank logins, so it can't move money or see transactions. Sign-in is handled by Auth0, and Thallo never sees your password. Your balances are kept in a database that is encrypted at rest and only lets you read your own rows. There's more detail on the security page.

What's a Signal, and is AI reading my data?

Signals are a short weekly list of things worth a look, for example, "These two accounts moved in opposite directions. Did you move money between them?" Thallo's own code finds them and calculates every number. An AI model (Claude, from Anthropic) then picks which ones to show and writes the sentences, using a summary of your figures: account names, amounts and dates. It doesn't get your notes, institutions, statements or logins. Signals are on by default, and if you turn them off in Settings, nothing is sent.

Who else sees my data?

Auth0 handles sign-in, Lovable and Supabase host the app and database, Anthropic writes Signals if you have them on, and Google Analytics counts usage if you agree to it. Google Analytics never gets amounts or anything you typed. Once paid plans start, Stripe will handle payments.

What happens to my data if Thallo shuts down?

You can export everything as CSV files at any time, so it's sensible to keep a recent copy. If Thallo shuts down, you'll get at least 60 days to export your data first.

How do I delete my account?

You can do it in the app. Everything is deleted permanently after 7 days, and if you sign back in before then, the deletion is cancelled.

Price

Is Thallo free?

Yes, during early access, and no card is needed.

Will Thallo stay free?

No, it will become a paid service. You'll get 30 days' notice first. Export, delete, multiple currencies and passkeys stay free on every plan. If you stop paying, nothing is deleted. Your account becomes read-only, which means you can still see, export and delete your data, until you pay again.

What it doesn't do

Does Thallo track individual stocks?

No. Thallo tracks accounts, not individual stocks, so there are no holdings, tickers, live prices, dividends or cost basis. A brokerage account is one balance, and your broker shows what's inside it. If you want stock-by-stock performance, a holdings tracker is the right tool.

Does it do budgeting?

No. Thallo never sees transactions, so there's no spending tracking or categories.

Can it read my bank statements?

Not yet. Statement upload, where Thallo reads a PDF or screenshot for you, is planned. For now you type in the balance.

Does it give investment or tax advice?

No. It shows your numbers and how they've changed, but it doesn't give advice or work out tax.
